Does anyone know what you need on the PSAT to quality for the national merit scholarship (just the preliminary?)

I know its over 200 (out of 240) and california's was 217 last year. Does anyone know where to find the break down by state?

I took a practice test today and got a 182, but I've never taken one before or studied so I'm hoping to get that up to 200-220 at least.

Thanks

*waits anxiously*

I know bigger states are harder to get through so WOO glad I'm in Colorado and not New York anymore.

Okay...my understanding is that you have to be in the 96th percentile in order to qualify, so the number changes from year to year depending on how people score. The year I took it was a 209, for reference.

And I know for a fact scores have been going down which is good (for me at least Wink ). I find it kinda sad that what, 94% of semifinalists are finalists, and just a couple of kids are cut.

Now are all stages based on the scores, or just preliminary?

The cut off in Idaho is 200 or so but that's because my state has a notoriously bad education system even without the scapegoat of the browns.

Should be taking this in a few months, hoping to break 220 this time around (I hit in the 190s last time, a 40 point increase from the year before)

Got a 220 when I took it last year. I was expecting a lot better. All my friends were in the high 220s or the 230s. Oh, well.

I think it's hilarious that they use a different standard for each state. Gee, you're pretty smart for a kid from a dumb state.

Same.  I got a 2000 on the SAT, though.

I believe the stat they gave us in high school is that almost everybody who gets it is in the 98th percentile.

I found it, turns out Colorado has been at 213 for 3 of the last four years so that's what I need minimum. 31 point increase in one month...0-0
