If the Republican candidates for President were Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum, who would you vote for?

Rick Perry ....................................................... 31%
Mitt Romney.................................................... 18%
Ron Paul......................................................... 11%
Newt Gingrich ................................................. 10%
Michele Bachmann ......................................... 9%
Herman Cain................................................... 8%
Jon Huntsman................................................. 2%
Rick Santorum ................................................ 2%
Someone else/Not sure .................................. 8%

If the Republican Presidential race came down to just Rick Perry and Mitt Romney, who would you vote for?

Rick Perry ....................................................... 49%
Mitt Romney.................................................... 37%
Not sure .......................................................... 14%

PPP surveyed 500 usual Republican primary voters nationally from September 8th to 11th.
The margin of error for the entire survey is +/-4.4%.

Wow, Newt Gingrich again in the double-digits - and the polls is even from before the debate.

Maybe he can rise out from the ashes ... Tongue Wink

He doubled his support! Victory is just over the next hill.

Oh, and its somewhat telling that Ron Paul is leading with independents.

Why are all the "somewhat liberal" respondents overwhelmingly supportive of the tea partiers? Democrats skewing the poll? Or do these tea partiers consider themselves "classic liberals?"

Also it's great that he's in the top 5 here, now he can be included in their general election matchups.

Oh, I'm sure he'd love to be on top of Romney.

Rick Perry ....................................................... 49% [+18]
Mitt Romney.................................................... 37% [+19]
Not sure .......................................................... 14% [+6]

It is interesting that although he still trails by double digits, Romney still splits the votes from the other candidates (even netting 1% more). The conventional wisdom (and I believed it) says that Perry would get the lionshare from Paul/Gingrich/Cain/Bachmann/Santorum but apparently not.

Even leading, I wonder how known Rick Perry is.  Wonder if some people who've said Gingrich, Paul or Bachmann still aren't sure who he is.

Well according to Gallup Perry has 75% name recognition with GOP voters, but Romney's is 86% so not sure it would be that big of a factor. Perry's name recognition is significantly higher than Cain or Santorum.

The McCain of 2012!

It would be bizarre if the Republicans would choose once again an old man as their candidate ... like in 1996.

Picking newt wouldn't be the end of the world. I'd love to see him debate Obama!

People, I'm beggining to believe Newt will be the nominee. He's only rising. And he's been the best debater, and republicans loved him in 1995/1996...

Newt certainly has no chance of winning the general due to his abrasiveness, but he'd at least be more entertaining than Perry.  I really want a fun joke nominee for an election cycle.

Does Gingrich even have a staff at this point? Does he have any sort of infrastructure in Iowa or New Hampshire?

Newt needs to actually have a state he can win before he can even come close winning the nomination.

Stop hatin' on the Newt, people!

Anyway, I think name recognition of Perry is misleading. I think people don't REALLY know who Perry is. They know he's a Southern guy supposed to be the new front-runner. I'm not convinced he will be able to keep all of those voters in the long run.

Yes, his entire infrastructure is now basically in Iowa. After reopening his Iowa office last week, he stated that he is betting it all there.

He has no staffers and is something like $2,000,000 in debt. So far as I can tell, he is just running for the fame and to increase book sales.

Bottom line, do Republicans want to go with someone who can defeat Obama, i.e. Romney, or someone who they perceive as ideologically in line with Tea Party orthodoxy, i.e. Perry?
