To be fair, in my experience this is a common mistake among people of a certain age (my dad still calls them "the Soviets" all the time).  Still pretty funny.

Reminds me of how my grandmother used to "listen" to the tv.

If you substitute "Russia" it's still absurd.

My parents (and many other people I know) still say "Czechoslovakia" and "Yugoslavia", but I have never heard someone say "Soviet Union" to Russia anymore, certainly not a politician running for President ... Tongue

Fear of all sorts of random unknowable evils and a feeling of being more vulnerable to them than they personally used to be. She's summed the core motivation of her base quite accurately there, in a sense.

OK, I agree she's a Great Fool, but on the other hand, thinking of the dear old Soviet Union brings a tear to mine eye - perhaps she's a fellow nostalgist like myself.

The dreaded Reds from Russia! I don't believe this is Comrade Bachmann's first history screwup.

It's her fourth this year. I've seen first graders with a better grasp of history.

Does the US fear the rise of India, either?  Everyone I've heardsays that they're a much-needed counterbalance to China.

Indians speak English.  They are no threat.

Our founding fathers fought the Soviet Union and communism before they even existed in the Revolutionary War and true American patriots will continue to fight it long after they are gone, good sir.

They fought against slavery too in their spare time, which proves how clever these indefatigable multi-taskers  really were, since 3 (WJM) of the six pack (WJMAFH) actually owned them (and one was an actual affirmative villain on the subject - do you know which one?). I wonder if Bachmann could name the six pack if asked.  I bet not!  The one she did name was not only not a member of the six pack, he was not even a founder. Tongue

Cute.

They also aren't threatening allied nations and then there's the whole Democratic Peace phenomenon....not really an equivalent comparison.

Russia is a vastly diminished threat that will soon become much more so due to their demographic death spiral, but they are clearly a threat to many of our strategic interests nonetheless.

This particular gaffe is not that big, and certainly no bigger than some of the speaking gaffes Obama and Biden have made.  Its a non-story.
