A recent article in The Economist makes me revive an old idea I had about influential wives in politics.
I'd like to transform this idea and take widows, daughters, wives, relatives of important politicians who have themselves gained a political role of their own.

Unfortunately, some hadn't official roles, even after their husband's rule: Raisa Gorbacheva, Agathe Habyarimana, etc.
Others had more important posts than their husbands, like Clare Short.
All these aren't included.

Her's a first list.
I have still to work on the US, the last country I haven't made researches on Tongue.

Wow, I foresee myself looking up a few of these names.  Looks good, and I will join.

With US names, it gives a list of 122...

Well, maybe I've been too generous, but each name is interesting, I think.
Some have ancestors or relatives of low interest but have known much success themselves.
Others are small politicians, but have great relatives.
I've kept a sort of average and I've dropped small politicians with small relatives.

Some are both daughter and wife or daughter and grand-daughter: no big deal, I've just taken the most important degree of parenthood.

I've ousted Ségolèbne Royal as her career is really parallel to the one of François Hollande, her former husband.

Is there any other idea ?

Is there an idea on how much to spread the names ? Country, continent, degree of parenthood, just one big list like the Roman Emperors ?

Is somebdoy else interested in, apart from Cinci ?

I think it's a good idea (Grin) as we don't have much women in these survivors...
And, as it's another survivor for fun, I'd carve "funny" rules.

I will join, too.

But I think you should keep Segolene^^

In Spain, fortunately, we don't have many dynasties. The only one I can see is Mercedes Cabrera Calvo-Sotelo, a socialist former minister niece of Conservative President Calvo-Sotelo and great-niece of the congressman killed by the republicans in 1936.
And what about Roseana Sarney, daughter of fmr. president José Sarney and Governor of Maranhao?

I like it, but i don't know if so many names is the correct thing to do, some don't seem to be of much importance. I mean, for instance Robin Carnahan is just the secretary of state of Missouri and a failed candidate for senate. If she is in then so should be, for example, Mercedes "Nina" Aragonés de Juárez, wife of a longtime feudal governor of the Santiago del Estero province who was herself governor for a while and was "deposed" a few years ago in the midst of some heavy controversy.

I'm thinking that we should either let everyone in or eliminate the most superficial ones like for instance Lenore Romney (?). I could probably think of a few more argie wives, daughters or whatever but it will end up clogging the survivor Tongue

It would probably be interesting either way though (if there are less names it will also save me time since i'll have to look who the hell half of the list are Grin), this is just a suggestion Smiley

Indeed, some US names are small names...
I'll probably cut some of them and maybe some South Asians too (and one or two Irish and British Tongue).
I must acknowledge I've also added German, Belgian, Danish, Finnish, French, etc. names to have a diversity of countries and not only the US, the Philippines, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Brazil and Argentine Tongue...

Julio, Sarney is already in.
I'll see if I keep your idea of the niece of Calvo Sotelo, but my first thought is positive.

OK, I've erased 23 names and added Julio's idea.
Which gives us 100 names.
That's indeed a max.

When you'll re-read the list, you'll be surprised by how many names you in fact know Wink.

Wives:
Soong Ai-ling
Soong Ching-ling
Soong May-ling
Jiang Qing
Rabri Devi
Nadezhda Krupskaya
Elena Ceausescu
Nexhmije Hoxha
Ana Botella

Jennie Lee (she married Aneurin Bevan very late)
Yvette Cooper
Glenys Kinnock (she isn't of big importance after all)
Nana Konadu Rawlings
Winnie Madikizela-Mandela
Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma
Simone Gbagbo
Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner
Sandra Torres (she didn't succeed in becoming a presidential candidate, after all; you know, she has divorced from Alvaro Colom to try to succede him as president)
Eva Peron
Isabel Peron
Vilma Espin
Rosinha Garotinho
Susana Higuchi-Fujimori (we have already the daughter)
Viola Burnham
Janet Jagan
Edna Manley

Ronna Romney

Sheila Kaul

Grand nieces-in-law:
Violetta Barrios de Chamorro

Now, I really don't know how to organize this list.
Maybe the simplest thing to do is to have only one list and begin to kill 3 by 3, "as usual".

I think SUsana Higuchi and Anaq Botella should be kept. Ana Botella will be the major of Madrid in the near future. Anyways, I'll vote to oust her as soon as I can.

I've tried to put in the names in four geographical groups:
- Asia would be coherent,
- I'd be forced to add Oceania to the US,
- to add Africa to South America,
- to add Central Asia and Middle East to Europe.

What do you think ?
A big list or four geographical groups ?
We'd be sure to oust US names (Grin), but groups may be of very different importance, as Asian and Latin American dynasties are the most fascinating.

I wait a bit for some input from survivormaniacs and in some days, we'll begin the stuff.
