segregated city, both racially and politically? In 1972, the 7th district which was 74% black at the time, gave George McGovern 73% of the vote. The 3rd district, which was in East Baltimore was around 70+% White (mostly white ethnics) and gave Nixon 67% of the vote.

Well it is a southern city. Why would this be surprising?

Most cities have heavy duty residential segregation. In 2011. Given that Nixon won in a landslide despite getting the GOP's usual abysmal support frm blacks, I'd say, anything else would be surprising.

No, as was pointed out, cities have tended to have residential segregation.

well what i found interesting was that there were ANY areas of Baltimore the republicans did well in . My question is is where did the people who were living in Paul Sarbanes district 40 years ago end up? Back then it was around 70% white and had a lot of Italian and Polish immigrants who were democratic by registration but often broke with the national party. The district gave Nixon a 42-41-17 win in 1968 and a 67-33 win in 1972. My question is, where did the white ethnics go? Did they die off, or did they move further out in Baltimore (County)?

Up until the 1960s Chicago was just as segregated as any city in the South.

Was? Been to the South Side lately? It's not exactly a rainbow of diversity.

You are probably right. There is a difference though. Nowadays it isn't ensured and kept in place by the Cook County Democratic Machine as it was when Daley senior was Mayor of the city.

Baltimore is NOT a Southern City! And the same goes for much of Maryland in general.

Dear Mother! Burst the tyrant's chain, Maryland!
Virginia should not call in vain, Maryland!
She meets her sisters on the plain --
"Sic semper!" 'tis the proud refrain
That baffles minions back again,
Maryland! My Maryland!
