normally that would seem preposterous, but I believe it is possible. Even though Whitman and Fiorina both won the county with 57-58 percent, I still think it isn't out of the question to win the county, especially if Obama came within 5 percent. I think they should try to win the county not for the sake of winning it, but because of symbolism. If the democrats could win Orange County of all places, then it would be sort of a watershed moment. It would mean that if the democrats could win a place thought to have gone democratic when "hell freezes over" that they could win anywhere and have unlocked the keys to building a coalition that rivals the New Deal Coalition. It would also put republicans on the defensive having to spend money in places they would usually dominate in.

Short of a catastrophic collapse, Obama is going to get CA's 55 electoral votes quite easily. It makes no sense to put in extra time and money (especially in an expensive market like SoCal) to win a particular county.

Could happen if the Mexicans move in as they did in Los Angeles County. Back in the day the GOP used to be competitive in LA County and won the overall metro area.

If Obama wins Orange County, it's only because the Republicans nominate someone insane enough to have affluent Republicans truly fear his (or her) election. Otherwise, not happening.

Didn't he make much larger gains in the Los Angeles metro counties than he did in the Bay Area? Eyeballing some results, McCain basically performed at Bush levels in places like San Francisco, or 2-4 points behind or so in the collar counties.

I don't think I would be comfortable supporting a party that Orange County also supported.

Obma made large gains in some of the more peripheral suburbs, but for the most part the Democratic vote in the Bay Area is already maxed out.

No, I'd rather not let the Democrats become the party of rich white suburbs.

The OC is 44% non-Hispanic white.

He lost it by 2.5% in 2008. It's certainly winnable.

Targeting specific counties in safe states is beyond stupid.

Really? Guess my image of the area is somewhat outdated.

Why not? They'd be an improvement over our current democrats. They'd still have their annoying social stances but wouldn't be so awful economically.

Targeting specific counties in safe states is beyond stupid.
Also, this. Targeting the OC would just be pointless and petty.

normally yes but it is an act of symbolism. If Orange County becomes winnable to the democrats, it is a way for the democrats to assert themselves that they are truly the dominant national party the same way that the party was from 1932-1968.

This is a brilliant strategy. Just get the Obama campaign to totally abandon winning Pennsylvania, Ohio and Florida and I'm sold!

yeah but if you win Orange County, you obviously would have also won Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Florida.

The OC electorate has a much higher number, though.

Umm that is dependent on resource allocation. Your suggestion is frankly, too stupid to discuss further.

Obama blew his chances of expanding his share of the vote in California with his handling of the economy. He will still win the state, but with a much smaller margin than in 2008. Orange County has as much of a chance of going Democratic, as Texas does going for Obama.

They're doing fine without it, and long-term demographic shifts will probably give it to them in the next 10-20 years anyway.

Considering Obama lost it in 2008 by 2.5% (less than 30,000 votes out of nearly 1.2m) the somewhat hyperbolic declarations in here about Obama's chances in OC are quite funny.

For the record, I don't think he will win it in 2012 - but it all depends on the GOP nominee... they commit a kamikaze  move and nominate a Bachmann-esque type then I think he will win it... but otherwise... no.

Why bother?  Its doesnt give Democrats anything extra.  This is just as stupid as it was when Obama was still campaigning for himself in 2008 when it was clear that he was going to win easily in October, rather than campaigning for downballot Dems.
