Dems and voters who didn't go to college are the least willing to vote for a Mormon:

Looks like a gay Mormon would crush an atheist in an election.

22% of Mormons are Democrats (Udall, Reid, etc) and know it's just an underhanded question about Romney?

Read the headline for that table, it means how many total would not vote for that group.

I don't know if I'd vote for a moron--erhmm, mormon, either. These people are theocrats to the extreme.

Those national numbers for a gay/lesbian candidate look promising.

I find it extremely interesting with the large gap between that and atheist. One would think those two would have closer numbers, considering most religions disapprove of being gay or lesbian

Does anyone think that the 22% who won't vote for a Mormon realize that the Mormon they're talking about is Romney and associate him with the question and say no?

Train of thought: Mormon = Romney = Not Voting for Romney = Not voting for a Mormon

The LDS action with Prop 8 in California (an engagement the LDS leadership I suspect has regrets about), may have bumped these numbers up.

Perhaps, though it looks like the %age who wouldn't vote for a Mormon has been largely static over time...preceding Romney's 2008 presidential campaign.

Though I do remember a similar analysis of the partisan breakdown over "Would you vote for a woman for president?", which showed that there was an increase in the # of Republicans saying they wouldn't vote for a woman for president during the mid-2000s, which coincided with Hillary Clinton being touted as a potential presidential candidate.

As an atheist I'm not at all surprised by this.  'Atheist' has such a huge negative connotation with many religous people, even more casual church goers.

The 22% Is not Mormons who wouldn't vote for other Mormons, its the total population that wouldn't vote for them.  Its the same as the headline numbers.

EDIT:  Grammar sucks

Atheists are up to the 50/50 mark.  Guess I should start to think about running for office after all.

I bet that in the minds of some people Mormon=very religious, an they don't really know anything about the religion. That combined with a Mormon Republican frontrunner and I think that pretty much explains the results.

Very true. When I think of atheists, the first thing that comes to mind is some person that considers religion dangerous and religious people fools, and is obnoxious in making his beliefs known. I've never actually met an atheist like that, but the image remains...

Funny. I've always heard the stereotype of Christians who are obnoxious is making beliefs known. I've even met a few like that, but they're not the norm.

Interesting that Democrats are the least tolerant, and Republicans are the most.

Probably related to the fact that Mormons tend to vote Republican. It seems that tolerance is only meant for your supporters.

I'd vote for a Udall for President (which one doesn't really matter).  I don't consider their Mormonism to be a problem.
