I could see Romney, Johnson, or Huntsman win Maine.

Agree.

It's not entirely out of play, but it's not a tossup under even the most forgiving analysis.

Maine has an independent/libertarian streak. That's why Dr. Paul could win.

Absolutely not.

Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann both have a chance at the nomination, and the only way they could possibly make Maine competitive is in a massive GOP landslide, which isn't going to happen, sadly.

I certainly wouldn't call it a tossup but I would consider it in play if Romney or Huntsman got the nomination (also Johnson, as before, but I don't see him winning). If Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann, or even Santorum, Gingrich, Cain, and the rest of the pack was the nominee, no way; if it was Pawlenty and things were going very badly for Obama, maybe.

Maine is what, 5 points more (D) than the national average? Continued high unemployment, high misery index, high gas prices and Romney could probably beat Obama by five nationally if he runs a good campaign (he has to find a good way to counter the flip-flopping and sleaziness charges). I think the rest of the field pretty much hands Obama a get out of jail free card though if present conditions persist until election day.

At this point, no, it is solidly Democratic.  Except for NH, New England is solidly Democratic.

If we are talking ME going down, we'd be talking about NY and CA going down.

You took that a bit too far. I see ME going before NJ, probably closer to MI. Never underestimate the ferocity of the angry white working class. They will vote against any incumbent if times are tough enough.

Maine
Barack H. Obama   Joseph R. Biden, Jr.   Democratic    421,923    57.71%   4
John S. McCain, III   Sarah Palin   Republican    295,273    40.38%   0

New York
Barack H. Obama   Joseph R. Biden, Jr.   Democratic    4,804,945    62.88%   31
John S. McCain, III   Sarah Palin   Republican    2,752,771    36.03%   0

California
Barack H. Obama   Joseph R. Biden, Jr.   Democratic    8,274,473    60.94%   55
John S. McCain, III   Sarah Palin   Republican    5,011,781    36.91%   0

That's a pretty big gap. ME is Lean/Likely Democratic, sure, but equating ME with NY is worse than equating with ME with NH.

McCain rhymes with Maine though, so he might have overperformed.

hahaha

Paul could probably make Maine a tossup, and he might be able to do the same for Oregon and Washington if the president wasn't too popular.

Inversely, he would probably make Florida safely Democratic and wouldn't do so well in traditionally strong Republican states like Kansas and leaning Republican states like Georgia.
