Democrats did not really well in the state (I think they lost 6 or so seats last year) and there's been no poll out from there since before the 2010 elections.

Gov. Quinn (D) also has approvals in the low 30s right now.

Could you imagine that the next polls out of Illinois will show a close race between Obama and Romney ?

Could Quinn drag down Obama as much as the loser-GOP-governors in WI, FL, MI or OH ?

I think we all agree that no other candidate would have a good chance in Illinois, except maybe Huntsman or Giuliani.

Well, slight correction - 4 seats.

With all due respect to Tender, I have to say that this "Unpopular Governors hurting their party's Presidential nominee" logic is the biggest bunch of political nonsense I've heard in awhile. I'd be amazed if more than 2% of people vote against the Republican nominee in 2012 because their Republican Governor is unpopular. Same goes for Obama in Illinois because of Quinn in 2012.

I'm disappointed, TB. I actually did a double take to make sure such a silly thread question wasn't started by one of the usual trollish suspects. Sad

Aha.

What`s wrong about discussing a possible "election surprise" ?

It doesn't mean it's going to happen, I`m just looking forward to the next IL poll.

It`s the opposite situation of IN, where everybody believes that Obama has no chance, despite the fact that there was no poll from that state since November 2010.

Exhibit A: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Kirk

With all apologies to Franzl, this so-called "moderate" recieved a 90% voting score in 2009-2010 from the Christian Coalition. Harp about how "southernized" downstate culture is in IL, this ain't what was promised.

lol

How does Romney make Obama's home state competitive? That's even more questionable than the idea that Romney would make Massachusetts competitive.

Certainly Obama's constituents from the time when he was a Senator will still vote for him. I don't see any reason why Quinn would influence Illinois' opinion of Obama, either.

Those governors are doing the right thing. Doing the popular thing would mean austerity in the future.

Like others have said, I don't see it. Illinois is way too liberal to vote Republican--even if Romney, the Republican nominee, is more liberal than other potential nominees.

Why hasn't anyone else stated the obvious on this topic? The Governors won't impact how people vote for President. Swing voters won't get swayed by this stuff. It's nothing more than a fantasy that rambling idiots that are given hour long programs on MSNBC like to blather about each day.

I don't see IL being competitive w/ Romney. I'd say Obama's floor, even if the election were today, would be in the mid-50's.

Romney is not the unstoppable candidate people are making him out to be. If he can't even be competitive in the state he governed, how is he supposed to win the President's home state? That aside, even Jimmy Carter won Georgia solidly amidst a dramatic collapse everywhere else, so either way, it's not going to be in the Republican column.

Maybe if Lincoln Chafee becomes a Republican again and is the nominee.

It's more likely to have at most a marginal effect on a marginal race. Wisconsin and Michigan are both unlikely to go R except in an Obama catastrophe. But Florida and Ohio... the Republicans dare lose neither state if they are to have a new President in January 2013. If the 2012  election is to be anything like those of 2000, 2004, and 2008  then only a small shift of votes one way or the other will be enough to decide the whole Presidential election.

There's absolutely no way Illinois is going to be competitive with Obama on the ticket.

There's no way IL will competitve in 2012. I think it would be possible for Obama to lose every other state in the country and still win IL. Not that I think Obama will lose 49 states, but if he did, IL might very well be the only one he wins (along with DC).
