http://wsws.org/articles/2011/jun2011/ndpc-j24.shtml

Having been catapulted into the role of Official Opposition, the trade union-based New Democratic Party (NDP) is now seeking to convince the Canadian ruling class that it can be trusted to rule on their behalf, supplanting the Liberal Party as the bourgeoisie’s “left” party of government.

many of the articles on this site are rhetorical and amateurish, but I still read daily for the fresh perspective and occasional gem, such as yesterday's on Obama's Afghanistan speech:

Considering that the NDP was founded as a model Gaitskellite party, you'd think that the ICFI crowd would have considered them to be a 'bourgeois party' anyway.

It seems to be written using rhetoric several decades out of date. Which unfortunately is still 'in vogue' for some journalists.

I don't think these people think of themselves as 'journalists'.

Evidently the Healyites have not come to to terms with the fact that the 1970s ended over thirty years ago.

They say as much in the article:

Oh, I never bother to read articles on Trot websites unless I'm in the mood for a cheap laugh, I was just working off that quote.

Though, actually, this:

Is hilariously inaccurate in almost every respect. But then you'd expect that from these people.

BAH.

I'm sure the Socialist Caucus believes this, but most NDPers are fine.  We voted to defer the motion though on removing the word Socialist from the preamble of the constitution.

I guess the sentiment won't flow both ways:

I like how the article glosses over Tommy Douglas and the War Measures Act, even when they had a perfect lead-in to it with "Canada was convulsed by social struggles". The worst part is that, apart from the last few paragraphs of rallying, the article sounds like a nihilistic slamming of the politician class, which has been done much more humourously by others.

Oh.

I thought it would be an article on the NDP fillbuster in Parliament about the postal strike.
They are debating since 10AM, Thusday and debated all night and all day.

So, now, 37:30 hours in row.

Awesome filibuster. I can't see it being very popular with the public, but I guess it's important for the party to stick up for what it believes in.

Ahh Barry Weisleder. I always see him at the convention stirring up s**t. Always trying to amend the schedule for more debate time. DL (who I met at convention) told me that he can never get elected as a delegate in Trinity-Spadina where he lives, and has to run in some random Mississauga riding every time. (seems odd having a socialist representing Mississauga but anyways). Also, all of his resolutions get shot down, and are steaming with strong, over the top language.

The NDP's ridiculous behaviour in regards to the strike certainly won't edge me closer to even considering voting for them.

I'm watching this filibuster on cpac (cpac.ca). Quite fun. Nice to see the Liberals on our side, and helping us out.

The NDP's ridiculous behaviour in regards to the strike certainly won't edge me closer to even considering voting for them.

Ridiculous. It's all parties except the Tories.  The party you seem to hate so much. I guess perhaps you're a Conservative now?

I think I've always made it quite clear I'm conservative in regards to unions. Which certainly isn't enough common ground with the PurgaTories to make me support them. Stop grasping at straws. It's ridiculous.

Well, you're criticizing the NDP for the same thing your Liberals are doing, which is totally bashing a party because you don't like them. I realize your views on unions, but it is unfair to criticize just the NDP when the Liberals are behind us in this.

Hash just doesn't care about the middle class. Why else do you think he would support the Liberals? Smiley

Anyway, whatever. Either the NDP is too far-left, or it's too right (wtf?). There will always be complaints, just like with every other party.

Look. I think than all should be done to restart postal service, but I'm not ready to send the message to other employers than we should switch to another pension system, less favorable to the worker and more favorable to the employer.

Especially than Canada Post is a business which is making profits since 1994.

This is a lockout anyways. Before the Canada Post executives locked out the workers, they were having a rolling strike; that was better for Canadians, if not a little annoying.
