I heard somewhere that her approval ratings has fallen below 50 percent. I thought she was even more popular than Boxer?

What I heard was more about intensity of support than anything.  I don't expect a serious challenge to her, unless CA implodes and/or things get economically worse, and only if someone like Tom Campbell is the nominee for the GOP.

Oh, Feinstein can't be defeated, not even against Campbell, no. That opportunity passed with Boxer. She has enough moderate heroism to piss half the electorate off, yet win very comfortably.

Well, it's possible that she doesn't run anyways, in which case the seat might become competitive, though, probably not, especially if Newsom runs.

Newsom would be a relatively weak candidate.

Moderate heroes aren't very popular anymore, and Feinstein is somewhat moderate compared to the average Democratic voter in California. I'm not sure who exactly Republicans could run though that would actually give her a race, but the state is large enough that there is bound to be some former Cabinet official, ambassador, or self funder that could throw there hat in.
