Congressman Jim Davis (D) FL-11 has hinted at making an announcement of his intentions to run for Florida Governor. Any ideas about this race?

Sounds like it's going to be a tough Democratic primary.

What is Jeb going to do after the governorship? Theoretically he could challenge Nelson, right?

That's most likely what I think will happen. I think Jeb will go head to head with Bill Nelson for the senate seat.

Maybe Castor will run for governor? She probably won her Senate race. Damn Diebold.

JFRAUD's "logic" is that if his candidate loses, the race was stolen.

I think it's a Democratic trait to whine about every race. I was in class today and there was a brief discussion of the past election. Of course a classmate of mine (a Democrat) yells out "Oh come on...it was stolen..." Oh of course. I get it. Democrats lose = Republicans cheated. Makes perfect sense now. Maybe it's just because they have been losing so much these days that they need to use the same excuse. Who knows?

As for Jeb's plans in 2006, I hope he runs for Senate. Nelson seems vulnerable and Jeb would have the best chance at winning.

Democrats in my history class whined about how they hate Bush, but at least none of them said Republicans cheated.

That's a race I would actually like to see.

If Jeb runs against Bill Nelson, then it would probably be a very tough, if not impossible fight for Nelson.

Nelson is not that popular and he barely won in 2000 (51-46%) over a very weak incumbent in Bill McCollum (whose inability to bring out Republicans hurt Bush as well).

A good moderate Democrat certainly stand a good chance but if the Republicans can field a good candidate as well, they should have the fundamental advantage.

States, who do you think are the best Rep candidates out there for Florida Gov?  Obviously, there's a pretty deep bench considering their dominance at the state level of politics there, but you know the state better than I.  Who can best compete for those swing (leaning Rep.) voters in central Florida?

McCollum wasn't the incumbent Senator. Senator Connie Mack retired that year which led to an open seat.

And it was 50-48 Nelson not 51-46 Nelson and the race was a lot closer than expected (Nelson was expected to win by 10 points)

My mistake on the McCollum being an incumbent.

However, I just looked up in my Almanac of American Politics and it says that Nelson won 51-46, so I don't think I screwed up that one also.  Smiley

According to CNN's results archive, both of you are wrong.

http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2000/results/FL/frameset.exclude.html

Nelson - 52%
McCollum - 47%
Logan - 1%

I have tried to think of people on the local level and I have yet to think of anyone. All the higher ups are pretty conservative and I'd say pretty much to the right of Jeb. I don't know I'll have to wait a year more to see.

CNN stops updating that site a day after the election, so the official results are different after all the votes are counted.

I think Jeb could beat Nelson in a Senate race given his popularity and the fact that Martinez just won an open Senate seat. I believe FL is trending republican....all the state-wide offices are held by republicans and they hold majorities in the legislature.
Offhand I can't think of anybody else who is popular enough to run..Katherine Harris has too much scum on her after the election.

I am bumping this thread because Mr Lawton Chiles, Jr is looking into running for governor of Florida. Bad news for us Republicans in the state.

Is Chiles a Dixiecrat, or just a typical socialist lib? If it's the former, I don't think it really matters. If it's the latter, I don't see why he'd get elected.

Not a true Dixiecrat but from that same line of my daddy was a democrat. Basically a good ole southern boy. The Chiles family line runs deep in FL. Kind of like your Warners, Custis', Tylers, etc.
