And another second rate country (and the last one to outlaw slavery in the Western Hemisphere at that) shoots ahead of the US in a key human rights issue. Not even remotely surprising.

A great advance, but a great failure of our institutions. Justice is now a semi-legislative power. They decided many legislative questions, like stem cells and clean slate law. Our legislative power need to be more active.

I still think that Uruguay will be the 2nd Latin American country to legalize same-sex marriage, but Brazil could be 3rd and that's good news. Latin America is slowly (or relatively slowly considering most if not all steps towards marriage equality have happened in the past decade) heading in the right direction Smiley
