Fox is saying it. (not sure if it's true) Can a republican beat Obama now?

Now there is pretty much zero chance Petraeus runs...but I do think he'd win in a landslide if he choose to challenge Obama now.

Confirmed just about everywhere.  What effect will this have on the morale of his followers?  Either they will be temporarily crippled, or someone will fill the void and Bin laden will be a martyr for the cause against America.

Feel free to discuss the 2012 implications in this thread, but for the broader implications of this, there is this thread:

Obama's approval will be VERY high tommorow

I think he hurt himself waiting THIS long though to announce (not that his poll numbers will drop, but they won't be as high as they could have been), fox got it first. It's 45 minutes late, he lost the umph of announcing it as President.

What I'd really love to see is Petraeus' approvals

Doesn't matter. Most of the nation will wake up finding this out from the President.

Obama's ratings will soar but not to like 89% or 99%.

Yeah, probably to something more like 55%.

I'd say around 60% but it won't stay there very long.

First, credit belongs solely to the troops and the military.
Second, the media is already starting the drumbeat for Obama's approvals.
Third, you are going to hear this come from Obama's lips every single chance he gets to boost his approvals and dems will politicize this to kingdom come.  They in effect will be doing the very thing that they maligned republicans for - politicizing 9/11 for gain.
Fourth, I predict there will be a post by a lefty on this board saying in response: but you did it first so now its our turn or its different because...
Fifth, the rest of us aren't forgetting gas and food prices, and the lack of jobs.

Oh, Obama gets a bump of some sort (predicting actual numbers is rather difficult).  And then it'll go away.

In the end, barring a major war or something, Obama's re-election is all about the economy, and if bad, whether the country trusts the Republican to run things again, remembering Bush.  Since the economy will be bad, the key question is really the latter.  Just how bad the economy feels to the ordinary American does impact how much weight is given the second question, so you can't ignore the first question.

Hero generals win landslides for the incumbent President, and only later for themselves.  Lincoln/Grant; FDR/Eisenhower.

The job isn't finished; there is also Ayman al=Zawahiri, the top aide to Lex Luthor ... but I can't see that aide going far and fast until he is put on a military brig flight to the US.

Spade's right.  Obama may see the plus side of 50 for a few  weeks, then it'll go  away.

Come on with the sour grapes GOP guys. Bin Laden is dead, this is the best possible outcome. Any president would rightly claim this as an accomplishment of his administration. I doubt Obama is going to run on it like some kind of platform plank, but that doesn't mean he has no right to talk about it. He is the commander-in-chief of the military and once we have more info, it may well be true that he made the right strategic moves to get this accomplished.
