This poll was not paid for or authorized by any campaign or political organization. PPP surveys are conducted through automated telephone interviews.

PPP is a Democratic polling company but polling expert Nate Silver of the New York Times found that its surveys in 2010 actually exhibited a slight bias toward Republican candidates.

I wonder what is the name recognition for NAACP - may account for much of those who don't know between them and the KKK who suppose it might be more like the Black Panthers? even accounting for some of that those GOP MS numbers are pretty disappointing.

are 18 to 29 yr olds in GA and NC more racist than the 30 to 45 yr olds?

Should Interracial Marriage Be Legal or Illegal?

GA

Base
18 to 29
30 to 45
46 to 65
Older than 65
Legal     62%   51% 77% 68% 45%
Illegal    22%   28% 14% 18% 35%

Shua: I have a theory; that demographic is too young to have experienced the Civil Rights Era for themselves but old enough to have been taught about it by racist parents.

So Generation X is the least racist, and Y is only slightly better than the Silent Generation (of whom the backlash against the Civil Rights movement was mostly consituted).

The only large one was North Carolina.  Having a MoE below 4% is pretty good for most polls.

I find that a little hard to believe, considering that Generation Y is the first to have grown up at a time when interracial dating is socially acceptable, though less so in Mississippi than almost anywhere else.

It is consistent in Georgia and Mississippi, though. What's the age breakdown for North Carolina?

Subsample margin of error, people.

Even so, have you seen the results for the referendum on interracial marriage in Alabama from 2000. I would say that these attitudes are consistent with the region.

I was talking about the variation within the age breakdowns. I don't doubt the overall numbers.

Yup generally speaking the larger the black population, the more Democratic the county, the more they voted in favor of the referendum, the larger the white population, the more Republican the county, the more they voted against the referendum.  Basically one of the few heavily white areas where the referendum was strongly favored was Madison County (Huntsville) which is perhaps the only area in Alabama where you will find more than two white liberals.

Yup, North Carolina has the uptick in opposition to interracial marriage among the youth, too. That makes me think it isn't just wacky subsamples, although of course more data would be better to know for sure.

I have a feeling many people would be uncomfortable answering this poll honestly.

The demographic breakouts in any poll is called a subsample .  The subsample is obviously going to be of far fewer people than the poll itself, and therefore will have a higher margin of error.

Ahh ok - I thought he was talking about the poll itself.  I didn't see whoever it was who posted the breakdowns.

The man's a solitary kook, and paraded by neo-Confederates to "prove" there is nothing racist about their views and the Civil War had nothing to do with slavery. "See, its a black guy with us!"

Your point?

And among Georgia McCain voters:

51% support legal interracial marriage

43% are glad the North won

and 35% have a higher opinion of the NAACP than the KKK.

All three questions have huge undecideds among McCain voters, including 55% not sure whether they have a higher opinion of the NAACP than the frigging KKK. Roll Eyes

NC's numbers aren't much better. In MS pluralities of McCain voters actually oppose legal interracial marriage and wish the Confederacy had defeated the USA in the Civil War. Positive feelings of the NAACP narrowly beat out the KKK by 20% to 14%, with a whopping 2/3 of McCain voters "unsure" which is organization is worse. Roll Eyes

God I love southern Republicans. Tongue

There is a mass exodus from big, inner cities towards more rural areas. For example, people from Chicago moving to rural Indiana, or people from Cleveland moving to Kentucky and Tennessee.

I know many people myself who were once residents of Cleveland and quickly slid south to North Carolina, Tennessee, Arizona and Kentucky, respectively.

While you can't be sure of the reason, it's fair to say you're a lot more likely to see the true reasons face to face with these people than in a poll that was conducted by PPP.

Are you trying to say they are causing exurban growth in these places or are you saying these people are moving into actual rural communities?

Rural areas have been losing population so that can't be right.

It's called "white flight". It's been around many years.

An example of it is from a city near where I was born. The population of blacks increased from 14% to 44% in just a couple of years, and 40% of whites left the city.

It's called "white flight".
