Hyperbole aside (reading the article tells you the Administration has not banned anything), I have a few issues with the translation. I found the original article and translated the paragraph myself:
But this announcement is meaningless without background knowledge. CCTV, the state media company, has been fighting a losing battle against privately-held stations. Said privately-held stations have cashed in on syndicating popular TV series from the nineties, which has spawned identical efforts from CCTV and other local TV channels. It has only continued the trend of remaking popular shows from the past. Keep in mind "sci-fi" is nonexistent in China; these time-travel shows usually deal with someone living in the present being sent to the past, making a parody of history.
The Chinese state media complex wants the remake trend to stop. For one, it's not helping China's attempt to shift the centre of world media away from the US. Second, it does not help to stir patriotism, the Communist Party's last propaganda theme. Third, state media will lose its domineering position in the media market if minor stations can score big ratings by ripping off American game shows.
It's not as if the Chinese actually watch TV - most of them stream American shows online instead.
