Its odd that 45% say that will certainly not vote to re-elect him, but Romney is the only Republican to actually win even that much support against him.

45% say they "definitely won't"... but only until the the actual (horrendous) alternatives are placed in front of them.

45% is close to what the Republican percentage in 2008 was, so the number isn't that troublesome in you think about it.

Given how polarized the electorate is, the 45% doesn't really surprise me. I suspect that any President of either party, no matter how popular, would run into the same wall at this point.

"Definitely won't vote" will include people who won't vote for the Republican, either. Extreme illustration: if Sarah Palin should be the nominee and makes a fool of herself (or is shown as such) on foreign policy and military issues, then there will be people who waste a vote for a third-party alternative (let's say the Constitution Party or Libertarian party alternative) or else don't vote at all. This, I believe, would be especially troublesome on the states now 'marginally' Southern -- Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, Missouri, and Georgia -- for the republicans. The Republican nominee who loses even one of those states with a large number of electoral votes loses because there is no reasonable alternative to them as "Red" states.

All of those "marginally Southern" states have large African-American populations. Between blacks, Hispanics who have no use for Hard Right economics or social policies (largely in Florida)  such liberal whites as there are, and a large chunk of white moderates who might find some of the extreme positions of elected Republicans insufferable or even abominable, President Obama might have an easy win in 2012. If the political geography looks anything like 2008, then he wins at least as strongly.

I hope the GOP puts up anyone that isn't Mike Huckabee, Mike Huckabee seems to be the more reasonable and likeable person and would be the most difficult to define.  The others Trump with the Bither issue and Palin and Romney have considerable weaknesses.

I agree that Huckabee might be Obama's most worrysome challanger.  Thankfully, he doesn't appear to be running.
