Not (not a racist).

Actually, make that "Not, as I was forcibly kept from registering (not a racist)." Tongue

Okay, seriously, just because the Democrats were unpledged didn't keep them from being the Democrats. Macon County, the only Black-majority place where Blacks were already voting in significant numbers, went Democratic for a reason.

Barry Goldwater, for reasons not at all related to his position on Civil Rights (unlike most Alabamans).

Actually, it's a clear outlier, as in the 1968 election George Wallace outperformed relative to the rest of the state in every other county that voted for unpledged electors in '64.

Well yes, it was the only Black-majority place where Blacks were already voting in significant numbers in 1964, so obviously it was an "outlier".

Blacks were also voting in significant numbers in Mobile, but that wasn't Black-majority. More Blacks were registered to vote by 1968, hence why Humphrey won two more Black-majority counties.
The TVA Yellow Dogs in the northern part of the state voted for Wallace in droves, but came back to the Democrats afterwards - Al Gore still won three counties in the region (including two of the five that Goldwater lost).
