I always thought it was a pretty odd way for the old СССР to commemorate the centennial of the start of the American Civil War.

If they choose it deliberately (doubtful), it would be rather ironic.
What's less clear is what the first shuttle launch commemorated: Gagarin's flight or the anniversary of the Civil War Wink

With all the delays STS-1 had, I don't think they were thinking about any stinking anniversaries by then.

The next 50 years will be even more exciting that the last 50 as private enterprise takes over space exploration (or exploitation depending on where you sit) from govts.
