José Alencar, Vice President of Federative Republic of Brazil during Luís Inácio Lula da Silva's presidency (2003-2010) died this tuesday, at Syrian-Lebanese Hospital, in São Paulo. He fought abdominal cancer during 15 years and disease came with strength during 2006' electoral campaign. He served also as Senator for Minas Gerais (1999-2002), elected by PMDB, but entering in former PL (Liberal Party, now Party of the Republic), in 2001 and being one of first members of PRB (Brazilian Republican Party, linked to UCKG). His only electoral defeat was in 1994, when he got 3rd place for Minas' governorship. Public image of Alencar was of a self-made man, that came from poverty in Muriaé, Minas Gerais to become owner of largest textile company in Brazil (Coteminas), now managed by his son, Josué Gomes da Silva. He gained more heroic characteristics after begin of his battle against cancer. He remained always optimist and happy, refusing to accept defeat. He always said that he wanted to go to at least 3 elections. His last public appearance was to accept a medal given by São Paulo City in January 25 th, with former President Lula and President Dilma. President Dilma received Alencar's death news in Coimbra, Portugal, along with former President Lula, that would go to receive a Doctor honoris causa title at local university. Both were deeply saddened by death of not only a political partner, but a friend. President Lula describied their relationship as one of "brothers, father and son". President Dilma ordered natonal mourning for one week. Funerals will be this Wednesday at Presidential Palace in Brasilia and this Thursday in Belo Horizonte, MG. Alencar's body will be cremated.
