Anyway I LOL at the idea that ´religion´(whatever that is) will go extinct in Ireland any time in the near future and for that matter, I LOLed even further at the idea at the use of statistics to show long-term sociological trends - how stupid are people, exactly?

Obviously, this is a textbook example of why extrapolating demographic trends 50 or more years into the future is silly.

I do hope that none of the money used to fund that 'study' could have been used on more worthwhile projects...

How very Daily Mail of you Wink

I certainly think organised religion is starting to 'fragment', which can only be a good thing especially if there are remnants of it's influence in the apparatus of the state. I don't think it'll go 'extinct'; it's like saying art will go extinct; religion and superstition are parts of our artistic side. Belief will no doubt evolve. But ultimately the numbers of people who will say 'you know what, it's all a crock of sh-t' will also rise. So it balances out

Does attempting to replace proper academic analysis with inherently dubious mathematic models (insert rant about cliometrics here) count as superstition?

Anyway, most forms of associational life have been in decline in the 'West' for at least forty years; what's striking about the place of organised religion in that picture is the fact that it's place in it is so typical of the wider pattern. But we all knew that anyway.

but the unaffiliated in Ireland are already at 4.2%!  and who knows about the US; there's no data at all because we don't ask it in the census!

Of course, but the news stations will always want to put out sensationalist headlines, no matter how much they have to abuse basic logic to make up these headlines. I say just ignore this stuff.
