Also, the tsunami will pass 6 DART buoys before it really reachesareas close to the U.S., so that'll be a good way to gauge how bad it may be.

For those interested, here's a map of what's been issued:

Adak, the westernmost municipality in the United States and the southernmost city in Alaska, should be getting hit right about now if the tsunami is going to hit Alaska.  Unfortunately, communication in Adak is very poor, so we may not have reports from AK until it hits Dutch Harbor.

This is fascinating... I'm actually watching the buoys and seeing them measure the water column height changes as the tsunami passes: http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/dart.shtml

Many of these places have got warnings out; so that should help. Of course, it's going to be devastating to homes.

My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected.

With all due respect, the most terrifying part was watching cars trying to drive away from it, and not make it.  Sad

First waves should be hitting the North American coast within the hour.

Tsunamis can travel at 600 miles/hour, because the more shallow the water, the faster the wave travels. A car has no chance, it only makes sense if you are using it to reach behind a sea wall or a tall building.

Apparently it's been reported that the Harbor has been completely destroyed.

Horrifying and incredible news. My best to the victims and responders.

Incidentally I'm traveling in late April/early May to Chile to meet with the Emergency management personnel down there and exchange info how they dealt with their quake last year. This rash of earthquakes is making me a little uneasy about that.

The cars, and the wave were rushing across farmland.  Some did make it.

There was damage, but it is far from completely destroyed.
