The interesting thing is that Friedrich also contradicted one of his CDU predecessors. Wolfgang Schäuble had already stated in late 2006 that "Islam is a part of Germany and Europe".

He didn't say anything strange or bad, I see.

Mindlessly stupid and demagogical would be more accurate, indeed.

At present islamic immigration is still recent and didn't mix in a steady way with population, so we can't say that it "belong" to Germany, or Europe, in the future maybe yes.

No religion "belongs" to any place. It is just a non-issue, or bettter a wedge issue to avoid trying to solve the true problems caused by immigration.

Then the question is when "recent" stops being "recent". The first Turkish immigrants came to Germany 50 years ago. This also means that we got people of Turkish descent who are of this age and who were born here.

Actually, there is nothing particular offensive about that it does not "belong to" Germany, there is a big difference between "belong to" and "belong in" I must agree with this. But the point about the Turkish immigrants is also well taken.

So, how does christianity or judaism 'belong to' Germany? Surely the only faith that really belongs to Germany is the Pagan one, no?

I would certainly argue that totally secular German values have a good deal more in common with Christian and Jewish values at the present time, at least.

I see that you're unfamiliar with the German conservatives' concept of the Leitkultur (leading culture? guiding culture? guiding identity?). This Leitkultur is mostly described as either a Christian, a Christian-Jewish, or a Jewish-Christian Leitkultur. Islam or any other faith are obviously excluded from the German Leitkultur.

You've got to see Friedrich's remarks in that context as well.

In an attempt to imitate the Tea Party, Bavarian PM Horst Seehofer has said that he is fighting  immigration until he runs out of bullets or something.

Eh, please keep the crazy politics on the other side of the Atlantic ocean, please. Tongue

Well clearly once you run out of bullets you move on to using gas. If that's the implication he wanted to make, congratulations, great success!

it's an issue as far as people feel that it is, and indeed religion has some concrete impact in many fields regarding everyday life (instruction, festivities, ethical issues)

In fairness, Hitler didn't say it about the Jews but about Stalingrad. Still not endearing, of course.

This is the same guy who couldn't count in German, right?

It's also the same guy who had an illegitimate child with a Bundestag staffer. Cheesy Apparently, it neither hurt his marriage nor his political career. Forging your doctoral thesis is a much worse offense in Germany.

Religion and its role in society is an issue. Singling out a religion for its supposedly evil essence is demagogy.
