I was talking to someone the other day and they said that the republican party is going through what the democrats did from that time period and that a lot of fissures are being detected in what was thought to be a solid coalition? Despite them taking over the us house, would you agree?

It could very well possibly be.  I suspect that the GOP, at least on the surface, is more solid than the Democrats were. That doesn't mean that there a fundamental differences that could cause their political dynasty to collapse, though. A lot of Republicans hold the same policy ideas, but they do it for different reasons and maybe that will evolve into different people having different ideas. What happened to all of the quasi-socialistic rural whites of the 30s? They knew what they were getting into and don't deny what their grandparents did yet always talk about the evils of "socialism".

Realignment with the presidency favoring the Democratic Party? Yeah.

The Republicans are split, but I'd say the Democrats had it worse.
