Let's say RFK is shot in the arm but survives, and somehow overcomes the Johnson/Humphrey Machine as well as McCarthy by pledging an end to the violence of 1968. He follows his brother's 1964 plans and selects Terry Sanford as a way to appease the Johnson,Humphrey machine. Johnson refuses to endorse Kennedy but Humphrey does.

On the Republican side, Rockefeller is tied with Nixon at the convention. Governor Ronald Reagan refuses to tell his delegates who to vote for. Rockefeller barely wins due to favorite sons delegates switching to his side. Rockefller chooses Michigan Governor George Romney as his VP, to appeal to moderate and conservative Republicans.

Wallace runs as an independent, claiming to stick up for the common man, as well as the voter who wants a change. He selects Happy Chandler as his VP. The year 1968 is the same as in rl, except for the nominees

Who wins and why?

Wallace would only do marginally better in the South. Happy Chandler was persona-non-grata with Wallace's base, so that would be factored in.

I'm thinking a narrow Rockefeller victory here, or an electoral dead-lock.
