Oh well, carry on

"Emigrating" instead of "emanating"? Doesn't sound very upper class to me.

It is really something of a myth that the american upper class is erudite, Lewis.  While admittedly they're probably only upper-middle-class, the point is Torie and his whole clan have firmly had the silver spoon in all their mouths.

I guess you missed the post where my Dad and his older brother had to work nights while in high school to support the family, while living in a tenement in Bedford Styversant (sp) (a bad neighborhood then as now), with no windows (it was an interior unit, illegal of course now), and no air conditioning. My clan has had its ups and downs. But yes, I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth (my Dad was a remarkable man, as was his brother). But other than a free higher education, I have not taken a dime from anyone, until of course the recent little inheritance. My share is one sixth. That is rounding error for me, but I do love the land, and plan to keep all of it other than the cropland.  I will because I can.

You ought to Google Francis Fulford of Great Fulford sometime.

Fortunately we were able to leave relatively quickly.

I'm with opebo on that.  Goddamn, if I were in that room and ran out of my Listerine pocket-spray I'd be on the verge of a panic attack.  (If I'm around unpleasant smells, I just spray the stuff constantly so the taste of the Listerine overpowers any other taste/smell sensations)

Great idea Mikado.  Here in Thailand many people used to use these menthol inhalers at all times, even walking around with them stuck in their noses. This use has dropped off somewhat in the last few years but you still see it fairly often.

<Soothing, but uplifting background music plays>

You know, it wasn't long ago that an attorney my age could expect to be wealthy and own land like this. <start slowly walking left, while staring intently at camara> But today, our country is on the wrong track. When an aging lawyer only owns this much land by virtue of inheritance, something in the American dream has slipped away. <Stop and square towards camara, smiling slightly>. My name is Steve Dunn, and I want to be your Congressman. I'll go to Washington to fight for the small millionaire, who still dreams of their first yacht, and hopes to someday leave their children their first private jet. I'll work to ensure that wealth is maintained by the Paris Hiltons and Donald Trump Jrs just as their families intended. And in doing so we will turn around our nation's economy by fostering growth in the Cognac, limosine and "private services" industries.

<smile broadly as music swells> Won't you help me in this effort? With your support, we can finally reclaim our nobility's birthright. I'm Steve Dunn, and I approve this message.

<Steve Dunn for Congress, 2012. Frederich Koch, Chair>

You are by no means remotely so douchey as that Torie, but the picture just spoke to me. Wink

Yachts (I get seasick), and planes (airports suck) don't interest me Badger.  No the commercial would be about all the farm subsidies and property tax breaks that I get, as I walk along to the CRP land, the countercyclical land, the wetlands, and a nice tour of the FSA office with 15 government bureaucrats in it handing out the money to 800 farmers, and performing all kinds of little studies for me for "free."  It would be quite transfixing, trust me.
