i hate to rain on the 'we love harry reid parade'...but this is a no brainer.  rudy!!!

reid, while being an amiable guy, is a man of limited leadership abilities.  his career peaked when he was on the nevada gaming commission and getting death threats.  he is just taking up space in the senate.

I'm probably the only big fan of a Reid run for presidency on the forums, heh.

Please stop saying such and such democrat can carry the south, I don't care if Woodrow Wilson came back from the dead, he wouldn't carry any southern states so cut it out

I actually agree with jfern (write this date down). Reid could carry the south against Giuliani.

Philip--Guliani won't get the nomination, because he won't beat ANYONE, not even Hillary.  Because Religious Right people won't vote for him.  Especially a pro-life D like Reid....all of my RR friends say they'll vote entirely on the abortion, and if the Republican is pro-choice, they WILL NOT vote for him, period.  Without the evangelicals, a Republican can't win, and therefore, Guliani WILL NOT win.

That's an absolute joke. Against a pro-life Democrat, he would have trouble in the south. Against Hillary? Dream on.

Clinton carried Southern states and Gore came close, with a Republican such as Allen or Owens a moderate Dem could, but I don't see any potential Democratic candidate who has the same regional appeal that both Bill Clinton or George Bush have, Bayh could well swing Arkansas along with West Virginia, BUT beyond that no…. even where Warner to run in 2008 it would very hard for him to carry VA (more likely than Edwards carrying NC mind you), which is one reason why he will probably run for the Senate and run for the Presidency in a contest further down the road in 2012 or 2016 even 2020.

I wouldn't be too sure about that should a moderate Republican nominee prove unpalatable to social conservatives

A Democratic moderate stands a better chance in the South than the liberal Kerry, who in some states still attracted a larger slice of the moderate vote than Bush (though this was insufficient to offset Bush's advantage among conservatives). Liberals are pretty thin on the ground down there!

Moderate Democrat v moderate Republican could produce some interesting results in Dixie come 2008

Tell that to Bill Clinton. You don't understand the difference between Conservative and Republican, I think.

I could never vote for Giuliani after what he did to his wife. I'm sorry, but no matter what kind of politician he is, that is unexcusable.

Just one more reason why Rudy wouldn't have a prayer of getting the religious right vote. He's not exactly Mr. Family Values.

I don't know if Rudy would carry New York in a cakewalk. There are lot of people in NYC who can't stand him, and New York is the second most Democratic state in the nation, can Rudy swing 20 points?

Probably not, I'd expect Reid to take NY over him.

Just to let you all know, I don't have strong opinions about this contest, but I do believe that I would vote for the dry Harry Reid before I voted for Giuliani just because I, too, am pro-life, which would make our philosophies very close to one another.  I don't care one way or another for Reid as a politician, and initially before reading this post, I didn't think Reid could win, but after reading arguments opposing Giuliani, I am pretty sure he can.  I know so many people who, like Alcon, would never vote for Giuliani because of his affair; my mother is one of them.  And I know many many many many many many one-issue (abortion) voters and they would vote Reid, for obvious reasons.
