This may end up being the first debate.  Nancy Reagan announced a debate to be held at the Reagan Library "this spring" with no specific date attached, but it's not clear that there will be enough candidates to hold a debate before May, so it's not clear if that debate will happen before this one or not.

UPDATE:

And now they've been leapfrogged by an even earlier debate in SC in May by Fox News:

It's great that we are announcing debates when there aren't even any declared candidates yet.

A new debate schedule for May 5th:

Not sure if this will actually happen as scheduled or not, or if it'll be delayed.  It's not clear that there'll be enough candidates to have a debate by May 5th.

Wouldn't it be funny if no one had announced they were running by the time the first debate came around.

Maybe they picked a date they knew Mexicans would be too busy partying to hear what was being said about them.

I think no Republicans are going to the NBC/Politico debate.  The hostility between credible Republicans and NBC is just way too high.

I expect everyone credible to be in the race by April.

the most under-the-radar storyline thus far is Romney continuing to push back his date.  The most over-reported storyline is Mike Huckabee claiming to wait until August when everyone knows he will not be running for president.
