Amtrak to let passengers bring guns on most trains

By Tony Bizjak
tbizjak@sacbee.com Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010

Reversing a near decade-long ban, Amtrak will allow passengers to bring guns on most trains starting next month, including several that stop in Sacramento.

The change, pushed by gun rights advocates and ordered by Congress, aligns Amtrak's firearms policy with air travel rules that allow unloaded guns to be stored in locked baggage holds.

Federal Homeland Security officials on Monday said they are OK with guns being on trains as long as security protocols are enforced.

Seriously though...of course it does.  The knee jerk reaction some people have when they read the word "gun" (on both sides of the issue) must send a lot of them to ER.

I read the entire thing, and I still oppose it.  Guns should not be allowed at all, much less transported on the same conveyance as their madcap owners.

Except for the police and military, I assume?  How else would those filthy democracy-supporters be kept at bay?

huge supporter.

This is the coolest thing since Sam Peckinpah stopped making movies.  Well, sort of.  After all, your article says that they have to be unloaded.  And stowed away.  In places out of reach.  But hey, it's sort of like "medical marijuana" right?  It's not a bad start.

I would agree that having unloaded guns in locked suitcases in the luggage compartment is, in fact, totally safe.

But wormy, a gun could accidentally be loaded and accidentally go off.  The bullet might go through the suitcase and might get lodged in someone's brain.

I suppose it would be uncivil to ask whose brain . . .

Don't really see anything remotely objectionable with this. Particularly since their unloaded and concealed... I'm not exactly Mr. Gun Control in any way, shape, or form though.

Not to mention its amtrak.

I support it... it only makes sense to bring it in line with airline policies (if not even moreso, because it's a lot easier to access an airline cockpit than a locomotive).

Threads like this just further prove how many left leaning hacks we have here.  No, "hack" isn't the right word...at least hacks try to defend their wrongness with spin and distractions.  Let me start over....
