Some guy I occasionally associate with told me the other day that now the Republicans control Congress and the House of Representatives, Obama won't be able to pass the healthcare bill that'll give everybody free healthcare.

I felt a little bad for this later, but I actually laughed in his face.

I never feel bad when idiots are exposed, they are less dangerous then.

14% think the Republicans won both the House and the Senate. That's a good start but Obama's got to work to push that number up.

Shouldn't be that big of a surprise that people don't follow current events. I'm sure the public would do much better if the question were about the latest reality show.

Like what happened on the latest episode of "Sarah Palin's Alaska".

I wonder what percent of Americans could name the Vice President without being given multiple choices (like a fill-in the blank test).  I'd guess under 50%.

Pew included that question in a poll in September:

Eh, I'd argue that current events shouldn't really be the judged as the benchmark for "ignorance." The ability to draw a force diagram for a high school freshman physics class or the ability to describe the difference between mitosis and meiosis is far more important, since physics, chemistry, and biology have a much more profound impact on your existence than people like Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, and John Boehner.

And truth be told, I cannot do a calculus problem beyond telling you that the first derivative of 3x^2 is 6x. I couldn't even tell you what the second derivative of 3x^2 is without consulting a book. But I can tell you that the EU is going to bailout Ireland as opposed to Canada or India. That doesn't mean I'm smart or anything; that just means I can consult some stupid website like CNN and read and retain information.

To be expected. Pathetic, but not surprising.

I'm curious about how many responded "Sarah Palin." There was to be a few.

Some guy I occasionally associate with told me the other day that now the Republicans control Congress and the House of Representatives, Obama won't be able to pass the healthcare bill that'll give everybody free healthcare.

I felt a little bad for this later, but I actually laughed in his face.

I've heard worse. Some girl told me the other day "Hooray, the Democrats are back in office! They won back Congress! Now Obama can give us free healthcare and end the war in Afghanistan!"

I didn't laugh, but I did scowl.

In fairness, I wonder what the numbers are for people who actually voted in the midterms as opposed to the public at large (the latter was apparantly polled here).
