when a German corrects a French on his 'Gaul culture'. No matter the way it took you to go there, thanks! But anyhow, the point is that nobody is able to pronounce it correctly.

Speaking about equivalences between original and foreign editions, there was so much references and wrapped up things tied to the French culture which made some of the salt of Astérix, that it would almost need the equivalent of a 'foreign Gosciny' for each foreign edition for people to really enjoy, foreign adaptations might have been a real work since apparently Astérix knew a big success in several other countries.

The early Asterix translations into German were really new books with the old pictures. With new names for the heroes. Who were Germanic rather than Gaul. (Which makes for particular fun in Asterix and the Goths, which becomes a visit to the GDR. )
Uderzo and Goscinny got these things banned after the fourth one, and there were retranslations. The upshot though is that the order of the early books is all messed up in German to this day - Cleopatra is volume two in German (Asterix the Gaul remains volume one, though).
