Seeing the title of that other thread, I knew why this poll was here, which got me out of curiosity to read an exchange I probably wouldn't have bothered with otherwise...

Wow. Few things fall into the category "worth reading because they're so stupid", but this is one of them.

Yeah, the thing is most of those few things also happen to be said in BRTD polls.

"legal" no, of course not.  Do women get murdered in European Muslim communities with no one ever getting caught for it?  Hells yeah, all the time.  cite

Well, until the 1970s or 1980s it was theoretically possible in a few European countries to be acquitted of murder provided that the accused's wife had committed adultery. This had nothing to do with Islam though... more with Catholicism.

Well yes, but it's quite different than the state openly stating that it's OK to do so because the murders are allowed under Sharia law. Doesn't happen.

As Lewis pointed out, incidents of Sharia law being recognized in Western countries is mostly instances involving the status of people from countries where Sharia law is valid. If two people are married in a Muslim country in accordance with Sharia and then immigrate to the US, they are considered married in the new country. That does not mean that it would then be legal for the husband to commit an honor killing* or that this "recognition" of Sharia now means the state is on the way to legalizing honor killings, allowing the stoning of adulterers or chopping the hands off thieves.

*Not that there's very many countries where this is legal anyway. I think it's basically Saudi Arabia, Iran and the Islamist-controlled parts of Somalia.

Still, one wonders how diligent law enforcement is on prosecuting these crimes. Why don't they punish people for refusing to testify, for example?

I won't use the media term for that sort of murder, but that sort of thing (as the quote itself says!) is certainly not restricted to Muslim communities. As for people getting away with it; sure. But then people get away with other forms of murder all the time. If it's worse than normal in that regard, it certainly wouldn't be because the law turns a blind eye, but because no one trusts - not really - the policy or the justice system in minority communities.

Much like murder in many minority neighborhoods its de facto legal in some cases due to issues such as Al discussed above, but not de jure legal by any stretch of the imagination.

Isn't demonizing this denying another culture of their cultural heritage?
