Gore was the obvious nominee in '04 because he won the PV in 2000, lost the race in a very contentious manner, etc.

All but the Indoctrinated Spouters of the Ultra-Liberal Dialectic acknowledge that Bush won this one.  They may not agree on why, but they'll agree on that.  The two major options for why, when it comes down to it, are:

1)  We didn't appeal to the center enough.

2)  We didn't appeal to our base enough.

--both of which show something seriously wrong with Kerry as a candidate and as a campaigner.  Gore would have had a very good shot in 2004 off of the 2000 outrage...there's no outrage in 2004.  Kerry doesn't stand a chance.

The big candidate everyone is anticipating in 08 isn't Kerry, it's Hillary.
