Nixon may have been the only evil president, but at least he didn't start a terrible economic crisis as the Great Depression.

1824, 1912, 1980, 1984, and 2000 come to mind.

1988 or 2000. 1968 was also pretty abhorrent.

Lyndon Johnson was definitely evil too.

Plus Hoover was still less bad than the guy who replaced him in 1932.

Can't say the same for Nixon and LBJ.

I'm not gonna debate with you, but Johnson, Hoover, and "The guy who replaced him in 1932" were not evil. Anyone known as a Great Humanitarian can't be evil. The other two had their moments, but they weren't supervillains or anything like that.

Hoover was good person, but completely unfit for the presidency.  Nixon is almost pitiable in his sociopathic scumbaggyness, while Johnson really was outright evil.

I beg to disagree. The man more or less singlehandedly ended the greatest era of economic expansion and mass affluence in human history.

France 1997: the biggest stupidity of French right to date (but maybe 2012 will be worse Tongue)

Spain 2004: stupid, though deserved, defeat

Australia 2010: this ugly lady should have lost big: you don't decide a dissolution like that.

Every Belgian general election for the last 15 years (let's explode now and stop bothering everybody !).

Every Italian general election for the last 15 years, too.

Yeah, I know, but, sometimes it's just a question of principle.
Dissolutions are politically and electorally very funny, but, basically, they shouldn't be used out of convenience.
The first problem was to replace Kevin Rudd. Some bad polls for 2 or 3 weeks ? So what ? And now, you've got a lack of majority and an instable situation.
You can't be so short-sighted in democracies. Of course, they can manage it in Australia, as they've got time, geography, growth, international partnerships, etc. in their favour.
When you see Belgium, Italy and Japan, dissolutions like this one is really of bad taste.

Sometimes, I'm so upset by some situations that I'd be able to vote for anyone else:
for example, If I had a choice between Aubry and Royal at the moment, I'd vote for Royal.... Grin

Better than what we got now, anyways. I like Bretton Woods.

Hitler didn't come to power due to winning an election, you know. He won the 1933 election, but he'd called that one himself.

("win" is sometimes used in the sense of becoming largest party... and in that sense he won both 1932 elections.)

Oklahoma District 2 elections.  Now I hate liberal economic policies, but guys like Brad Carson and Dan Boren literally are DINOs (I mean they make oft called DINOs like Mark Warner and Evan Bayh look like bleeding heart flaming Dailykos liberals) to the point of being worthy of having a Mel Brooks comedy made about them.

2002. Depressing and, at the time and to me, monstrously unjust after the 2000 election was stolen. Dems did badly all over the country and couldn't do anything about it. 2004 and 2010 won't compare for me. In each one, there was/is hope for the future and less of a sense of unfairness.

An election was due soon anyway (Australia has three year terms). Dissolutions in Australia are almost always political calculations to one extent or another.

I would use the eye-rolling icon against any other D poster who said that, but in this case I think that would be beside the point:

That 'stolen election' meme has to be the second most poisonous political belief in the US right now. As long as that idea, and the other toxic grudge prevails, genuine political debate, and genuine policy resulting from that debate, will not happen under this president or the next two following him.

Yeah, when he says it, I don't hear  "hack hack hack hack hack", like I do with many others.  But you get a Roll Eyes anyways, brittain33.  Tongue
