Hatfield outperforms Reagan in every region of the country except the South. He gets less electoral votes but performs substantially better in the popular vote, due to his stronger showings in population-rich areas such as the Northeast.

Carter is saved in the South, but loses everywhere else.

Hatfield wins in a landslide, although not of Reagan-like magnitude.

Hatfield wins in a landslide, although not of Reagan-like magnitude.

Why not? And why so many >40% states still? Hatfield doesn't break 50% in his home state?

It's unlikely that John Anderson would have still run under these conditions, and if he did, he certainly would not have gotten any traction with Mark Hatfield as the Republican nominee.
