He accomplished all of his major objectives during his 1st term and it was already too late by the time the economy crashed.

I see, but it's quite unusual for a President to not run again fully voluntarily.

Of course, King wasn't an "usual" President either Smiley

Interesting that you killed off King. I was kind of hoping that he would be an active ex-president.

In 2012, President Romney faces a primary challenge from U.S. Congressman Tom McLintock (R-CA), who gains minimal support and drops out after Iowa. He is renominated and keeps Vice-President Crist on the ticket.

The Democratic nomination is a bloodbath. Former Vice-President Hillary Clinton announced that she would not run, but many other candidates took her spot: Senator Barack Obama (D-IL), Congresswoman (and former U.S. House Speaker) Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Governor Mario Cuomo (D-NY), former Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI), and Governor Brian Schweitzer (D-MT). Feingold was the first drop-out after losing the Iowa primary by less than a percentage to Barack Obama, whom he endorsed. Both Pelosi and Schweitzer dropped out after Nevada. Both also endorsed Obama. The campaign season mirrored 2008 in that the primary season was a tough and dragging fight between two popular candidates. In the end, Obama was the victor. He chose Cuomo as his Vice-President.

The Obama/Cuomo ticket compared President Romney to George W. Bush (who endorsed him in both 2008 and 2012). President Romney stated that America did not want "King policies," which, although disrespectful to the dead, struck a chord with many Americans who remembered the 9%+ unemployment rates during the latter part of King's term. The election remained close, and Obama/Cuomo maintained a slight lead. However, Romney/Crist was able to hold on by a thread....

The closest states were New Hampshire (Romney/Crist by 0.03%), Florida (Romney/Crist by 0.19%), Colorado (Romney/Crist by 0.21%), and Missouri (Romney/Crist by 0.99%).

PRESIDENT ROMNEY'S SECOND TERM
The economy was wonderful during Romney's second term.

Despite the best efforts of the King and Romney Administrations, Iran attacked Israel in 2015, sparking a war that lasted until December of 2016. Iran fell apart completley in 2018, and officially became a democracy in 2021.

THE ELECTION OF 2016
In 2016, Vice-President Crist recieved a minimal challenge from Senator Rand Paul (R-KY). Eventually Paul was defeated and Crist chose ultra-conservative Governor Brian Dubie (R-VT) as his runningmate to appeal to the somewhat alienated conservative side of the GOP.

The Democratic nomination was a contest between Governor John Hickenlooper (D-CO), Governor Carte Goodwin (D-WV), and Senator Andrew Cuomo (D-NY). Goodwin dropped out after Super Tuesday and endorsed Hickenlooper. Moderate/conservative Democrats rallied around him and he eventually won the nomination. He chose Cuomo as his runningmate.

Despite the wild popularity of the Romney Administration, the Hickenlooper/Cuomo ticket defeated the Crist/Dubie ticket in a sold majority:
