No interest in this? Surprising; the details are really quite shocking. Willie Whitelaw and the upper ranks of the Catholic Church in Ireland. As conspiracies go, that's pretty... um... yeah.

Quite Frankly on this side of the Irish sea we are rather bored with Catholic church conspiracies. Indeed it often seems (if you listen to the media anyway) that everything which happened in Ireland from about 1922 to the 1960s/1980s/KELTIC TIGAH!!!!11 (Delete according to taste) was a massive Catholic conspiracy or was a Charlie Haughey inspired conspiracy/attempt to destroy the country or both.

But yeah, this is ridiculous and shocking. What else can be said?

Interesting, if rather murky.  After reading the report, it looks to me like the RUC didn't have solid evidence in their hands and the government did not want to invoke the Special Powers on a member of clergy. Father Chesney was nearly certainly involved in some form, but it looks like the government just wanted it to go away and we all know the R.C.C.  favored that course of action.

Unfortunately, most of the participants are now dead.
