 Aug 19 (Reuters) - New U.S. claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly climbed to a nine-month high last week, government data showed on Thursday, yet another setback to the frail economic recovery.

Not a good number, of course, but let's remember we don't know where these numbers are coming from. The Census, AFAIK, is laying off workers at a faster rate than expected, for example.
