Only prog metal band I really like is Mastodon. Even then, it took me months to be able to enjoy Leviathan or Blood Mountain. On the other hand, I liked Crack The Skye from the first time I heard it, though some of the songs on that album annoy the hell out of me.

Porcupine Tree is good Prog band (they switch between metal and rock).  Some of my favourite songs:

Great band. Deadwing and In Absentia remain my favorite by them.

Both albums are good, though Trains is usually the only reason why I listen to In Absentia.

Also, your username gives away one of your favourite bands.Tongue  I prefer Absolution from them, though the ending to the Resistance (Exogenesis: Symphony I, II, III) is one of my all-time favourites.

Tongue

Indeed, Absolution remains my favorite as well. The Resistance is just as good, though depending on my mood I favor the first half or second. Exogenesis is amazing, though I will admit it's a bit underwhelming live. They need an Orchestra there for it, in it's place they just use a barrage of synths. Just doesn't work as well.

Good point.  I hope that when they make a live dvd, they'll have an orchestra with them.  Maybe they can do something similar to Metallica's S&M.Smiley

Black Holes and Revelations is also a good album.  I just don't get why people hate Supermassive Black Hole so much (ok sure, it's been overhyped and used in Twilight, but it's still a good dance song).

It all has to do with Twilight. I'm not happy they have used their songs in the movies but whatever...they already have a following over the years of producing great albums. I mean, I actually like Neutron Star Collision...its a fun song but incredibly tongue/cheek. Live, Supermassive Black Hole is a beast. NSC is less beastly, but still fun.

Muse are one of the most atrocious bands around at the moment.

Anyway, trying to steer the conversation away from metal for at least some of us Tongue What's you guys opinion of folk?

K.

I can think of a handful of artists way worse obviously. Wink

When metal bands play live, do they usually wear the shirts of bands that sound the exact opposite of their own band?

That is the new trend it seems. If you're in a pop punk band, you wear a grindcore band's shirt. If you're in a metalcore band, you wear a Smiths or some 90s indie rock band's shirt. If you're in a soft and poppy indie rock band, you wear the shirt of some hardcore emo band. If you're in a such an emo band, you wear a pop punk band's shirt.

It's always seemed like that, not just with metal acts. My friend went to a Jack's Mannequin show and the guitarist was wearing a Lamb of God shirt. I thought that was quite hilarious.

Rock or Electronic.

Electronic rock?

Which is essentially Industrial. Squinting ....in a sense.

For the record, Half Light II (No Celebration) by Arcade Fire is my favorite song at the moment. The Suburbs is really hit and miss, the first half of the album kinda drags but they have really awesome and random songs in the 2nd half.

Year Zero? I would have probably replaced that with Pretty Hate Machine.

PHM has good tracks ('Head Like A Hole', 'Sin', 'Ringfinger') but there are a lot of tracks which are kind of bland ('Kinda I Want To' being a good example). I'm actually kind of surprised you said PHM and not Downward Spiral.

Downward Spiral is good, but PHM has always been my favorite. It has some of my favorite songs on it (Head Like A Hole, Down In It, Something I Can Never Have...).

Boo. They can be overrated, but their new album is still pretty good. +The Rasmus have a few good songs. Everything else yes, is complete sh**t.

I didn't mind sections of Supermassive Black Holes, but apart from that, I really don't like Muse very much at all. Prefer Radiohead Wink

Indeed, I can respect that then. I've never been much of a Radiohead fan. They have a handful of interesting songs but that's about it.

Glenn Beck or the guitarist from the Yardbirds (I think his first name was Jeff)?

Neither, though Jeff Beck is pretty damn badass.  And yes, he is the best guitarist of the three Yardbirds guitarists.Tongue

This is what I meant by Beck.Tongue

I like me some Beck.

If you buy Queen and you have a turntable, get it on vinyl, preferably coloured vinyl.  Trust me, it's worth the extra cost...my A Night at the Opera is one of my most cherished possessions and plays wonderfully.  Listening to Bohemian Rhapsody on the warm feeling and crackle of vinyl is one of my favourite things to do.

I love that album.

Ive only recently discovered Abbey Road (don't judge me....). I never was much of a Beatles fan, up until my friend bought the album and we both sat down and listened to it. It's quite amazing I will admit. Mind you though, I was quite under the influence while listening.

I sort of liked Welcome to the Black Parade, and had I bought and listened to the album a few years ago, I'd probably have enjoyed it. But I just can't be doing with it now.

The album isn't all that bad, it's just really odd and out there. It makes everything they've made before this album kinda irrelevant. I feel like if they made albums like this instead of Bullets or TBP, they'd be more successful. Na Na Na is a crap song though.

It's better than Welcome To The Black Parade, but still annoying. Catchy as hell though.

I think that "Na Na Na" is the only song I've actually enjoyed from MCR.

Just had to remove anyone who gave 'Power' by Kanye West over 3 stars from my friends list on RYM. Anyone who approves of a crappy rapper ruining an old prog rock classic doesn't deserve to have a music opinion.

Kanye West is pretty dire period.

That negates the fact that you think Lady Gaga is better. Daft Punk is actually pretty entertaining, baring Kanye West using them to the bone. Lady Gaga is an embarrassment to music, and is just utter sh!t.
