If Edwards hadn't been picked for Veep, would he have won re-election as a Senator?

Should he have stepped down as a Senator anyway?

Because he's now going to have to get himself a new job...

yes

Burr wins by only 5%. I think that Edwards, incubent and popular,  would have to win.

Possibly he might have won but they new Edwards was very liberal so I'd probably say he'd have lost by 5%.

maybe but Edwards would not have been liberal in his NC campaign. And I don't think that Edwards has been too liberal during this campaign. In fact, Edwards didn't really make campaign during this campaign.

He hasn't been liberal during his campaign because he wanted to get undecided voters. I was talking about all his votes in the Senate, that would have cost him re-election in NC.

I don't know what the hell he was thinking.  He might have chosen to run for both, as a fallback.  Could he have been so cocksure He'd be the nominee, or that he'd win VP even?  HMMM.  I think he would have been re-elected for as long as he wanted.  Maybe he figures there's more money in private practice ambulance-chasing than the paltry 200 grand they pay congressmen.

any hypotheses?

He wouldn't have been re-elected (like Fitzgerard in IL).  It was an invaluable use as advertizing for his law practice.

The less time Edwards spent in NC, the more popular he was.  He would have to have run an absentee campaign.

His popularity was very low here, until he announced his Presidential campaign.  When he announced he would not run for re-election to his senate seat, his popularity went up more.

The less he had to do with NC, the better he did in NC.
