Heath Shuler (D): 45%

The survey of 400 registered voters was taken July 22-25 by SurveyUSA on behalf of the Civitas Institute using the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) method.  It carries a margin of error of 4.9%.

And it's registered voters as well. Not good for Heath.

For whatever it's worth, Miller's internal polling has not been nearly this favorable.

Not that Shuler would be a great loss to the Democratic caucus.

Sad He's the only Democratic former athlete in congress. (Jim Bunning is the Republican)

No, Laura Richardson is a former athlete too.  She was picked for the 1980 Olympics USA woman's basketball team.

A close race here would be nothing new.  Incumbents were defeated here in 1980, 1982, 1984, 1986, and 1990 (the incumbent barely survived 1988), and Charles Taylor never really completely secured his seat.
