It's a little-known fact that Southern California voted to leave the state in 1859. More information on that is here.

     It is quite unfortunate that it was not acted upon.

Well, there were more important things to act upon, like an imminent civil war.

Back then, the idea was strongly supported in the south and strongly opposed in the north (Governor Milton Latham, a prominent proponent, freely admitted that it would have failed in a statewide vote). Now, I'm sure that it would do far better in the north than in the south (water rights and such). It's an interesting topic to speculate on.
