The reason the Democrats were demolished in the Deep South probably had more to do with the fact Kerry was the leader.

It would have helped since there is much social conservatism down there even among Democrats.

Most of my grandfathers family in Georgia have remaned Democrats, albeit generally conservative ones. Even now, most can't bring themselves to vote for the party of Abe Lincoln
