I am amazed at how Bush cleaned Kerrys clock in the deep south. I mean he seriously mopped the floor with Kerry.  Over 60% in Alabama, 60% in MS. These are Nixonesque type numbers for victory.

We're also looking at big turnout increases down there...
Ballots cast up 12 points in Alabama (not a growth state)
Up 23 points in Florida (unless I made some calculation error...)
Up 17 points in Georgia
Up 15 points in Kentucky (not a growth state)
Up 16 points in North Carolina
Up 19 points in Oklahoma (just insane for a declining state)
Up 12 points in South Carolina
Up 17 points in Tennessee
Up 13 points in Texas
Up 13 points in Virginia
Up 11 points in West Virginia

Also
Up 18 points in Hawai'i (not a growth state)
Up 18 points in Idaho
Up 12 points in Iowa (not a growth state)
Up 13 points in Minnesota
Up 13 points in Missouri
Up 26 points in Nevada
Up 13 points in New Hampshire
Up 21 points in South Dakota (Thune rode Bush's coattails and Kerry rode Daschle's coattails, I figure...)
Up 14% in Wisconsin
Oregon should also end up on this "up by more than ten" list once all the votes are in.

Unless I made some more errors, New York and Wyoming actually had declining electorates.

Almost all Evangelicals (and we're talking by WV standards here folks) Most of which rarely vote and won't vote in four years time (or if they do, will probably get cancelled out by increased Coalfied turnout) Too many bloody wedge issues this year...
Turnout in the Coalfields was pretty static. UMW efforts kept it from falling further.
Local Party bosses didn't lift a bloody finger to help Kerry *at all*.

Not surprising.  The South votes on religion, race, and intolerance.

Actually those numbers in the Deep South are very disturbing...

Bush won 80% of the White vote in Alabama, Kerry 91% of the Black vote.

Bush won 85% of the White vote in Mississippi, Kerry 90% of the Black vote

Are you sure?

If that's based on the exit polls... how do we know that's correct?

I get where you're coming from but it's the wrong choice of words.
"Humiliated" implies that his campaign team were actually interested in doing well there.
Or even knew what they were doing as far as WV went.

The following is more accurate:

"Kerry's campaign really, really, really ed up in WV, to an extent that would shock even the most braindead and incompetent strategist"

Better stop now or I'll start ranting

This may be disturbing, but it is perfectly normal.  The Southern Whites consider the Black their enemy.  The converse is true as well, but I suspect it is more of a self-defence reaction.

Opebo, it's just that kind of superior, condescending attitude by Dems toward southernors that creates these presidential blowouts in the South every 4 years.

Keep it up.....and history will again repeat itself in 08.

Don't call us intolerant and then ask us for our vote in 4 years.  BTW, the fact that we don't share your views on social issues does not make us "intolerant".

I'd much rather lose every presidential race than compromise with the likes of you.  Maybe if we can keep 40+ seats in the Senate we can prevent a total free-for-all of abuse.

And yes, your social views are intolerant, since you fail to understand that other individual's social practices are not your business.

Good. It's great for Democrats to lose elections for dumb reasons. I love it. Whine whine whine, of course Democrats are just as "intolerant" of their oppostion- you are a bigot, for instance, and the people over at DKos are full of hate-- they just suck at turning that into electoral success.

You'll be on the losing side for a while. Enjoy.

Yes, I freely admit to being bigoted against bigots.

And I never expect to be on the 'winning side' in a democracy.  Mob rule doesn't often co-incide with enlightenment.

Hating someone for their religious views is equal to hating someone based on their race. You're no better than a KKK member.

Actually, Democracy is about having the most people on your side. When you don't, you lose. And you lost.

And that type of attitude demonstrates exactly why the Democrats get the results they get.

We tried! But you had to suppress the freedoms of your fellow northerners to reign us back in! You blew it with Mr "Honest" Abe.

Kerry was never going to do well in the South.

The South is looking pretty bad for the Democrats nowadays. In 1965, there was 21 Democratic Senators and 1 Republican. Today, we have 19 Republicans to 3 Democrats. That said had the Democratic incumbents not stood down, I think they would have all been re-elected.

4 Democratic senators I forgot about Mark Pryor.

Are there any more Democratic senators in the Old Confederacy in addition to  Pryor, Landrieu, Lincoln and Nelson?

The reason the Democrats were demolished in the Deep South probably had more to do with the fact Kerry was the leader.
