This is one of those rare situations where I want the Green to win.

Kirk has seen downward movement due to the military record snafu. It's interesting that Giannoulias has not really benefited, but respondents are instead shifting to the Green candidate as a NOTA choice.

This stands in contrast to the impact of the bank failure on Giannoulias. That did result in a bump for Kirk. This week's hit is back at Giannoulias for paying no taxes on his state salary while the Feds bailed out his bank. The twist here is that part of the attack on Alexi is coming from Quinn who needs to be consistent with his attack on Brady for using business losses to avoid taxes.

Nor did I or do I expect Obama to lose in his backyard.  Jim Ryan would have been a better team mate for Kirk than Brady more wellknown.

That's not the worst news in the world for Alexi considering how third party candidates' support tends to collapse late in the campaign, and while some of those current Greens will stay at home or (far fewer) vote for Kirk as the less corrupt evil, most will likely come home a vote Democratic. I realize Whitney's strong showing in the 06 governors race might initially indicate an aberration with IL Green candidates, but I don't think that that will replicate in a race that is both federal (i.e. more partisan than gubernatorial races) and likely to be much closer than Blago's widely expected reelection.

I don't know. Both candidates are perfect targets for attack ads at this point; thus you will probably see a lot of people vote for the Green as NOTA while they turn out for local races.

The problem with Kirk is more that he's a serial liar who changes positions at the drop of a hat in order to get elected.

As a musing point: I wonder how many ideologically reliable politicians are similarly unprincipled but lack competitive electorates?  I imagine Vitter would say anything and change any position, but he doesn't have to.

Which makes voting for Kirk as logical as voting for Bachmann or Coburn.

Exactly. The idea that he's some principled moderate who will save his party and the country from the far right is beyond laughable.

So Kirk is pro-abortion, pro-tax, and anti-gun. Sounds like a real winner.

Of course as ha been mentioned in another thread, Giantkiller is shady as hell and comes across a typical Illinois Democratic politician much in the form of Blago. So I figure between him and Kirk, it all balances out.
