I was looking at the 2008 election archive and by this time in 2006, there were several candidates who formed exploratory committees. Why does it seem that every candidate is avoiding saying whether or not he or she will form one. And when will candidates start announcing their interest?

If I recall correctly, one of the earliest candidates to announce for 2008 was Biden. He did it in December '06. Like everyone else says, after the midterms.

Really?  Because I remember at this point in 2006 Mike Gravel was the only one who announced he was running ...

I'll take your word for it, but nothing is happening til after the mid-terms this year.

Vilsack announced his campaign the day after the midterms last round. But then he dropped out once it became clear he'd loose Iowa big.

Here's the timeline from last time:

link

Remember that both parties had open fields last time, so there were twice as many candidates running.  No Republicans announced an exploratory committee until Oct. 30th, 2006, when Duncan Hunter announced.  All the other Republicans waited until after the midterms, starting with Giuliani and McCain on Nov. 10th.

It's foolish to decide before 2011. As soon as the midterms are over you'll see a half dozen candidates throw their hats into the ring. By next summer you'll see another half dozen. Who do you think will be the first to step in? I'm thinking Pawlenty or Jindal.

Jindal will most likely run for reelection for governor in 2011, and won't run for prez.  Pawlenty will probably wait until his term as governor is officially over in January before announcing his run.  My guess on who will announce first?  Either Santorum or some no-name congressman who we haven't thought of yet.

I think Mitt should announce first, since he never stopped running.
