God don't remind me. Why on Earth do we need a 2-year long campaign?

It's more intellectually honest than a six-week campaign.

Wouldn't it be even more intellectually honest to just proclaim that campaigns never end?

Also, the first debates will take place in about 10 or 11 months.  The Iowa caucus may well happen as early as 18 months from now.

You mean your leaders actually try to govern without worrying about perpetual campaigning?  What a novel idea!

When we talk about the 2012 presidential campaign starting this November, what we're talking about is a group of mostly currently unemployed former governors vying to become the GOP's presidential nominee.  It'll happen in parallel with Obama and Congress continuing with business as usual.  It's not that the whole of DC stops to work on the campaign.

2 years is too long for a campaign.

That is true, but the governing is affected by the campaigns, as most pols are, in John McCain's words, more worried about the next election.  The politicians will never admit this, but they are very much swayed by the polls and what's popular and what will get them re-elected.  That's why I support term limits.  For most of our elected officials they choose their own political future over the interest of their constituents, and that's how most of our laws come about.  Not every politician is that way, but too many are.

Also, maybe four months from now we can start having some serious discussion on this board.

Yes, but that's pretty much the way it is everywhere, in every democracy in the world, regardless of how long the campaigns are.

Ding Ding Ding!!!  Franzl wins the prize.  Obama hasn't stopped campaigning since he took office.....few Presidents do.  The pubs are nothing but a cluster***k right now, and it doesn't look like clarity is coming from them in the near future.......

It would, but we haven't yet reached that point.
