During that time the  government would routinely back the actions of the capitalists, and imprison or kill anyone who got in their way. In the Age of pinkertons, robber barons, wage slavery, child labor, lynchings, and many other abuses one has to wonder how Eugene V. Debs finally decided to risk his life so often in order to ensure that conditions would improve. On top of all this such individuals as Eugene did not always succeed, and thus even when they did risk everything victory was not always assured. In short the man not only lived up to the right values, but he also performed well under extreme circumstances. It was hard work, but someone had to do something.

Can't say I like his ideology, but I'd have to score him as an FF for speaking out against the war and subsequently being thrown in prison by Herr Wilson.

next time someone suggests that we should get rid of the income tax, child labor laws, minimum wage, and survivable working conditions i'll remind them of the countless millions of individuals who were thrown into jail, shot at, and killed during that era of capitalism. Individuals such as bill haywood, eugene debs, and many more grew up in America's most violent era that no other generation after has ever witnessed. These people who fought and died for something greater than themselves. Not only did they survive some of our most brutal domestic conditions, but they also managed to stick to their correct principles of peace even though it meant the death of their career and ideology.

Reading about these events is almost surreal, but the amount of bloodshed and lives lost all in the name of profit makes it highly interesting. I'll never forget about how Eugene Debs never backed down from the authorities, or how haywood refused to use a gun even in self defense. These people fought for basic rights that many of us take for granted, and they didn't quit or use violence whenever someone began to shoot at them, threaten their family, or murder their comrades.

Gun nuts, and right-wing activists are cowards compared to these individuals. the tyranny they deal with today is nothing compared to what eugene debs had to deal with, and yet they still feel the need to use aggressive tactics.
