Reps. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), Ron Paul (R-Texas), Walter B. Jones (R-N.C.) and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) held a press conference to call for an open discussion about the efficacy, the extent, and cost of overseas U.S. military commitments.

Should military spending be reduced and by how much? ...Or should it be increased?

I don't mind the research aspect of it. I would also like to point out that many deficit hawks are often very one sided, and sometimes misleading when it comes to taking something out of the budget. I guess we could cut money to some programs, or even better just divert those funs into a more efficient program. Secondly I think the role of the military should slightly change its focus more towards humanitarian things as well.

I often find it interesting how our armed forces holds on to older bombers in order to reduce costs. This is because getting rid of various machines, equipment, and so forth is sometimes a very costly procedure.

Tell the military you're going to cut their pay for their service. Happy Memorial Day to you as well.

Because Military Paychecks are the only source of Military Spending.

More money would be saved just telling them to come home entirely.

Funny how many "fiscal conservatives" out there support bloated defense spending and foreign wars of intervention.

They don't want to come home otherwise they wouldn't have signed up.

Out of all the candidates for the Republican presidential nomination, Ron Paul received the most donations from military personnel.  And he's the only candidate who opposed the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The weekly standard thinks other wise, and secondly I have seen Ron Paul's donation numbers debunked before. In any event this thread is not about Ron Paul.

I know that.  I just find what Derek said to be absurd.  Many of these people who go over there were lied to about money for college and other B.S.

instead or countering with a claim you should simply ask him to providing supporting details, and citing a source in order to back up his claim. By doing this you are practicing one of the easiest debate tools, and making your opponent do the work.

Recruiters certainly lie, but you do get an ass ton of money for college if you can handle the military.

Recruiters are hilarious.  I went along with one in my earlier days just to hear all the bull they'd try to pass as fact.

And drastically reducing military spending should be a universal belief.  Even if you're Derek, you should be pissed about defense contractors chronically going over budget and making promises they can't deliver on weapons they can't build.  They're hurting our economy.

Oh and people sign up to defend our country not to go wherever to fight whoever.  That's a big problem with the Department of Defense these days.  It's the Department of Offense.

The Weekly Standard "debunked" the fact that Ron Paul received the most donations from military members?

Dramatically reduced.

When people talk about waste in government, the DoD should be a prime example.

Yes that would be a great idea. Really the only thing this country should worry about in a time of war or debt is military spending. Win the war and then come home and worry about things later. What other things besides military, defense, security, and education do you want to spend money on anyhow?

It should be decimated.  Massive amounts of the military budget are extremely unnecessary.

Yes, today we remember all the innocent lives ruined and destroyed thanks to the U.S. government and its long history of senseless warmongering.

Option 1, but only after we are well out of the recession. Don't want to lay off people now.
