I sent them to Silent Hunter privately, but I'll post if there is an interest:

J. J.'s First Rule of Elections:  "Any candidate that say something like 'I don't look at the polls,' or 'The only polls that matter are the ones on Election Day,' that candidate will lose."

J. J.'s Second Rule of Elections:  "When a politician or activist talks about a large group of voters that, a. aren't being polled, or b. really going to turn out and swing the election, there is no such group."

This is totally nonpartisan.  I developed the Second Rule while working on a Republican campaign.

There is a small problem with the first one.  All candidates say that.  I think it would be better changed to his advisors/supporters/talking heads.

No, neither did this year.

Actually, a google check showed that Kerry did on Jan 25, 2004 in an interview with Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday.

Howard Dean used the line just 3 days before, on Jan 22,  according to Reuters: "I'm not blow-dried, I'm not coached. I obviously don't look at the polls and if I did, they didn't do me any good anyway in Iowa," he said.

He said he didn't look at the polls showing him leading, that really isn't the implication here.
